ABSTRACT

THE ROLE OF MUTUAL FUNDS IN PORTFOLIO DIVERSIFICATION

This research investigates the role of mutual funds in portfolio diversification, focusing on: (1) the benefits of mutual funds for achieving diversification; (2) the strategies for selecting mutual funds; (3) the challenges in managing mutual fund investments. A survey design is used to gather quantitative data. Taro Yamane's formula is applied to derive a sample size of 300 respondents from Lagos, representing a mix of retail and institutional investors. A mutual fund company is chosen as the case study due to its wide range of fund offerings. The reliability coefficient score for the survey instrument is 0.87. Findings indicate that mutual funds provide significant diversification benefits, access to professional management, and ease of investment. However, challenges include fund selection, fees, and performance variability. It is recommended that investors consider mutual funds for diversification, conduct thorough research on fund options, and regularly review their mutual fund investments to ensure alignment with their investment goals.
